After fishing and kayaking off of the jetty's for a bit we returned to our van to make lunch; my brother went and took a shower while we were doing so and informed us that the owner said "we were over-staying our welcome". We all thought that was a little strange and decided to go ahead and pay the gentleman for the use of the camping spot for the night. My brother returned after attempting to do so and said that the old man (the owner) had simply said "just leave" without any further explanation.
We decided it was best to just go ahead and leave considering the sudden change of heart. On our way to retrieve our kayak from the beach the crochety old man stopped us and said he was going to call the cops on us if we hadn't left within ten minutes. My brother and i asked "what for?" And he replied saying we overstayed our welcome in the "daily parking" spot which he had already charged us double for. Apparently the average person only spends two or three hours here and then leaves (according to Mr. Krabby). We had been there for all of three hours.
I found the spot on Google and it had great reviews. I recommended it to my family thinking we would have a nice time considering it was on the water. We pulled up and originally asked to use the day parking so that we could use the beach and launch our kayak to do some fishing. I talked to the owner and informed him of our intentions letting him know that we had planned to pay for parking now and a spot later, he said that that was fine and that there were several spots available for use.
I've been going there since the early'90s and I've never been disappointed....Love it there
In the end, we got our kayak, laughed it off, and left. There were plenty of other places willing to take our business. The owner is a sad old man that just needs a little love. But be warned if you stay longer than three hours in the daily parking he may call the boys in blue on you.
Overall, not a pleasant experience, but then again, it's the only unpleasant experience we've had so far on our trip. Perhaps he was just having a bad day. Either way he could have at least treated us with the same respect we showed him.
Good campground. The beach at low tide is great! Great location.
We took a really impromptu drive to Maine - no plan, no place to stay, just pointed the car north and drove. We planned to camp since rooms are insanely expensive this time of year, and we headed for a place with lots of camp grounds, but we didn't have reservations anywhere (risky move). This campground was our first stop early in the afternoon, and I was bummed to see the "No Vacancy" sign out, as I loved the location. But we decided to stop - I figured I'd ask if they had a recommendation. The owner at first recommended a place down the road, but then saw our tiny car and asked if it was just us, and if we were tenting. He said he had one small tent space and we took it. It JUST fit our tent. We have a HUGE tent - bigger than our car, lol. But we made it work, after all, we just wanted a place to crash for one night. Yes, the place is tiny and people, mostly seasonal folk with campers and trailers set up like summer cottages, are packed in tight. And that, for us, was the fun of it. Every single person we encountered was friendly and said "Hi! Great day!" and that's not something I can say of many places. Everyone looked like they were having fun, and really, the location is fantastic. It was hot as blazes during the day, but at night it cooled down to perfect temps and there was a great breeze off the water. The swimming was great, and FREEZING, and the water is clear as can be. The bathrooms were camp bathrooms - rustic but clean. Campfires, chatter, and soft music went on well past 10, and that was fine by me - I fell asleep listening to our neighbor's Sting Pandora station. We loved it, and will definitely visit again. Best 38 bucks I've spent in a long time.
Sunshine, family, friends, kayaking, paddle boards, sea glass finds, running on the beach, feast with lobsters and steamers with lots of laughs sitting on the rocks!!!! What's not to love, making memories!
Fabulous....
